Oil prices have been falling like a rock the past several weeks. With reduced consumption due to the worldwide recession, prices have dropped from a high of $147 a barrel to the current price of $56.
A similar situation occurred back in the 70's/80's. Oil prices rose, then they dropped. All previous interest in conservation quickly faded once prices fell.
We cannot afford to fall into that trap again. In addition to oil being much closer to depletion than it was thirty years ago, the environmental impacts of oil and coal are now more apparent. In addition, our dependence on foreign oil has gotten to the point (at 70% imports) where it is quickly becoming a national security issue.
I urge all Americans to keep an eye on this and for each of you to keep in touch with your elected national leaders to ensure they don't take their eyes off the ball.
